Although the name Golem bears some lexical similarity to the name Gollum, (the evil character of The Lord of the Rings), Golem and Gollum are profoundly different characters. A golem is an animated, anthropomorphic being in Jewish folklore, which is entirely created from inanimate matter (usually clay or mud).
